Tripp had a little fun with me on the HBC Podcast recently. He did at TNT that looked back at an event 7 (!) years ago in which a bunch of progressive theologians were asked, “Who Is God?” I was one of them.
Now, it was 2010, and it must be remembered that I was in the midst of a PhD program. I’d also been asked by Phil Clayton to join this august group of 40 leading theologians, although I clearly did not merit inclusion based on my work.
Nevertheless, I gave it a shot. I said some good stuff, but I also coined the fairly ridiculous phrase, “God is theodically inhabiting me.” (What theologians do when they don’t know what to say is make up words.) I also took off my glasses as I said this, which Tripp points out because it adds a bit of dramatic flourish.
I really don’t even know what I meant by that sentence, but it felt good even if it sounded stupid.
Now, some years later, I’d answer the question more simply.
Who Is God?
- I don’t know.
- The Creator.
- The One who sent Jesus.
Ask me again in 10 years. 🙂
